Bishop Okupevi Announces the Formation of Three New Archdeaconries in the Diocese of Lagos

In a landmark moment for the Diocese of Lagos, The Rt. Rev. Dr. Ifedola Senasu Gabriel Okupevi, Diocesan Bishop of Lagos, announced the creation of three new archdeaconries, bringing the total to 17 archdeaconries across the Diocese. This significant development was made public on October 1st, during the 2024 Diocesan Prayer Walk, tagged “Walk for Full Restoration”, held at the Diocese’s Centenary City. The theme of the event was drawn from Joel 2:26-27.

The new archdeaconries—Igboologun Archdeaconry, Abijo Archdeaconry, and Badore Archdeaconry—are expected to strengthen the Diocese’s outreach, governance, and spiritual impact within these regions.

Details of the New Archdeaconries:

  1. Igboologun Archdeaconry
    • Headquarters: Emmanuel Church, Igboologun
    • Administrator: Rev. Folayan
The establishment of the Igboologun Archdeaconry, headquartered at Emmanuel Church, Igboologun, reflects the Diocese’s commitment to expanding its presence in less-reached areas. Rev. Folayan will take charge of the administrative leadership of this new archdeaconry, ensuring that the spiritual and pastoral needs of the people in Igboologun are met effectively.
  2. Abijo Archdeaconry
    • Headquarters: Anglican Church of the Transformation, Abijo
    • Administrative Archdeacon: The Venerable Kiri Wakama
The Abijo Archdeaconry will be headquartered at the Anglican Church of the Transformation, Abijo. Under the leadership of The Venerable Kiri Wakama, this archdeaconry is expected to lead the way in fostering spiritual renewal and development in the Abijo community.
  3. Badore Archdeaconry
    • Headquarters: Church of Ascension, Badore
    • Administrative Archdeacon: The Venerable Philip Akinwande
The Badore Archdeaconry is situated at the Church of Ascension, Badore. Under the capable leadership of The Venerable Philip Akinwande, the archdeaconry is poised to serve a vibrant and growing congregation in the Badore area. This development is part of the Diocese’s ongoing efforts to cater to the spiritual needs of the community.

Bishop Okupevi, speaking at the Centenary City during the Diocesan Prayer Walk, emphasized the importance of this expansion as part of the broader vision of full restoration, the theme of the prayer walk. He noted, “As we walk together for full restoration, we are also called to restore the spiritual and administrative strength of our Diocese. The creation of these new archdeaconries is part of this divine mandate.”

Drawing from Joel 2:26-27, which speaks of the restoration of God’s people, the Bishop expressed his hope that these new archdeaconries would serve as centers of spiritual revival, development, and outreach, helping to bring restoration to communities in Lagos.

The creation of these new archdeaconries is a significant milestone in the strategic growth of the Diocese of Lagos. By expanding the number of archdeaconries to 17, the Diocese is better equipped to provide administrative support and spiritual leadership to its growing congregation. Each of the newly appointed archdeacons brings a wealth of experience and dedication to their respective roles, ensuring that the vision of the Diocese is carried forward with integrity and commitment.

The 2024 Diocesan Prayer Walk, tagged “Walk for Full Restoration,” was a spiritually uplifting event that not only drew the faithful together but also marked a historic moment in the life of the Diocese of Lagos. The creation of the three new archdeaconries— Igboologun, Abijo, and Badore—signals a new era of growth, outreach, and spiritual leadership for the Diocese.
