THE RT. REV. FRANK MELVILLE JONES

He was born in 1866, educated at the Nelson College and the University of New Zealand and ordained in 1890. After a curacy at Holy Trinity, Cheltenham, he went out to be a CMS Missionary.

He first arrived in Nigeria as a 27 year old priest in Onitsha in 1893. He was later moved to Oyo to strengthen the faculty as principal of St. Andrew’s College, Oyo (presently known as Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo). 

It was from St. Andrew’s that he became the inaugural Bishop of Lagos in 1919, a post he held until 1940 (21 years). He retired with his wife to Osogbo but died the following year (8 January 1941). His body was taken the same day to Oyo & buried on the grounds of St Andrew’s College.

In all, he laboured for God and the Church in Nigeria for 47 years.
